9:30 - 10:15 am And therein lies the difference between us

Technology and digital content, and teachers who utilize it for instructional purposes, provides us with the opportunity to engage and individualize instruction for students in a way never before possible. Online and blended learning environments are redefining what it means β€œto go to school.” In his presentation Bruce will share insights regarding the growth of online and blended learning, use of digital content and technology and the importance of having teachers who can connect with students using these 21st century learning resources.

Bruce Friend, Director of SAS Curriculum Pathways
10:30-11:30 am The Isle of Eigg global learning project

Description: In the Fall of 2010, the Carteret Middle School, NJ, teamed up with PolyVision, and the Eigg School on a small island off the coast of Scotland. The goal of the program was to have students communicate with a group of peers from a completely different social background. Through interactive sessions between the schools, the students began to learn what it was like to be part of a completely different culture. The students have also begun to understand the importance of eco-awareness. We have been conducting weekly webinars with both schools so students may communicate via the eno interactive whiteboard. We have shared videos about our communities and interesting stories with people overseas. This program has opened the eyes of not only our students, but faculty as well.

This program is a stepping stone for Carteret Middle School as they begin to integrate technology into every aspect of their curriculum. Matt Finucane believes that the biggest change made in his school is not something that can be recorded with tangible evidence: It is the fact that students are once again excited about learning. The program helped change the school climate and provided resources to reach every student. Since the global learning project launched, Carteret Middle School has been recognized as one of the most improved middle schools in New Jersey.

Creating, integrating, and mobilizing content with the eno interactive whiteboard

Description: Using eno interactive surfaces is just the beginning of this transformative technology. The real power is how it amplifies instruction and shares the ownership of that instruction with students in a distributive way, enabling greater collaboration and relevance. With the advent of robust mobile appliances, such as the iPad and iPod Touch, technology resides beyond classroom. We will demonstrate how using eno with these appliances creates a dynamic for learning that reaches far beyond the traditional classroom.
